Oops, I did it again. I entered another logo competition. Yes, this is apparently my new “thing.”
This particular competition involved developing a logomark and brand guide for a flexible space in Brooklyn’s Crown Height’s area. Named “Cultivate,” the location serves as a co-work space during the day, but transforms in the evenings into a creative arts center, event venue, or after school program.
The concept of versatility was what drove the majority of my submissions (there was no limit, so why limit myself to one?) The mark needed to reflect the space’s physical evolution, as well as the vibrancy and diversity of its mission and neighborhood.
Hand-drawn Type \\ For this concept I wanted to play off of the playful and freeform nature of the space. I figured that very little is as freeform as hand-drawn type and decided to mix that with bright, poppy colors that would reflect the fun and upbeat vibe of the venue.
Growing Quadrants \\ My concept with this theme played off the idea of a growing an evolving space. Much like the venue, the logo can either be used in full (as in the image overlay) or in part depending on what best suits the moment.
Breaking Boundaries \\ This concept is a bit more abstract. Playing off of how the project was all about breaking the boundaries that traditionally define a physical space, I slashed the "space" of the logomark into two different areas of use.
Ultimately, it was my Growing Quadrants submission that was selected to be the official mark of Cultivate Brooklyn. (The owners decided after seeing the submissions that they wanted the location incorporated into their name.) However, work wasn’t quite finished yet as a few days later they sent me some photos of the space and asked me to rework the brand’s color scheme in order to match the interior design. The final results are as follows:
Keep your eye out for more updates on this project. They're currently building out the space and pulling everything together, but I'll let you know once their website is up and running so you can check out all the good they're doing in the Crown Heights community!
